In Favour of the Blue Sky [IFOTBS]

The romantic idea of an open source cloud has been shot down by a drone.

Everything digital is stored in the cloud. Data, sound and images. This means that reality is stored in real time. Satellite images are modeling earth. A video shot in Egypt triggers revolt. “The map to use the well-known fable by Borges, has not only become equal to the world, but exceeds it by far” [Hito Steyerl] The digital data cloud is some kind of hyper reality. But what happens when the weather turns bad?  We all feel that the internet has become awkward. It is clearly militarized, surveilled and monopolized. Thunderstorms and darkness have taken over the blue sky.

Since 9/11 the amount of US drone attacks is literally exploded. In a court in Washington a pakistani family went to testify after being bombed by an american drone. In courtroom is a young boy: "I no longer love blue skies. In fact I now prefer grey skies because drones do not fly when the skies are grey” The drone becomes a terrifying  manifestation of both the militarization and surveillance of civil people. This is the darkness of the blue sky.  When it’s in the air it moves both in a physical dimension and in the dimension of the cloud. It navigates through digital stored data and satellite images but simultaneously it is circulating above a small town in Pakistan. One might ask what will happen if the image doesn’t fit reality? The drone sort of explodes the boundaries between digital and physical reality. The cloud and the blue sky is merging. In the eyes of the pakistani boy the sky is no more romantic blue but turning dark.
